Next year, POP
turns 10. that's where this song came from. But the vox thing wouldn't
let me find POP via amazon for the picture so i used the "best of"
instead since it has a remixed version of the song. This album reminds
me of a lot of things. Actually its more like the album reminds me of a
year in which a lot of memorable things happened. Alas, it's not even
why I picked the song. All the statements in red are true.
Senior year, the last day of school before Christmas break. I had been giving my close friend CK rides to school. On this ocassion she was not ready on time and for the first time I was invited to her room. Otherwise known as a Hiroshima like explosion of clothes all over the floor. She had just gotten this Elton John album and we listened as she got ready. My elephant memory tells me that on the way to school we discussed the merits of Casablanca as one of the greatest movies ever according to Entertainment Weekly. Also, I made SK listen to a live version of U2's "Desire". She didn't like Bono's orgasm like moaning performance.
Years later, via Amazon's wish list
search, SK found me and I got to go to her company's Christmas Party. Fun
times. That was the last Xmas Party I attended. My current work place
is fucking lame and they don't have a party.
Originally this post was going to feature a great picture of my beautiful fellow Leonard Cohen enthusiast Anne Marie. It was a picture of her face being held by some fellow's hands. Alas, we both lost the picture.
Over the years this song has applied to more than one girl I have encountered. I'm always watching from far away.
What brings me back to this song? Is it the trace of a valiant attempt against the inevitable. The girl in the song will never leave the other guy and he doesn't really mean that whole marriage bit he sings about.
"You know this life is filled with many sweet companions"
I want to believe master Cohen. I sure want to, but some people are built for singularities and carefull choices.
